…I’m never sure if I’m doing it right. I swear I practice but when I get to class it seems I’m playing something totally different from what the teacher is playing.
…I can play the zils just fine, but as soon as I move I get all mixed up.
...OMG! My zils are too loud! (my neighbors complain and it scares my cat)
The biggest obstacle to learning the zils is finding a way to practice on a consistent basis, and there are so many things that can prevent that! This four-week special session addresses the issues that get in the way of practice by providing you with practical techniques that will build your skill and nurture your zil confidence.
Zil technique will be covered in class as well as…
- Exercises to build rhythmic skill
- How to use a metronome app for practicing at home
- A few tricks that will aid in zilling while actually dancing!
- Warmup exercises to strengthen your hands and fingers.
- Games that make learning zils fun!
- And of course, how to practice quietly!
Students will be provided with access to short online videos of warm-up exercises and practice patterns for learning at home.
This class will meet weekly over four weeks and is open to all levels of zil players – yes, even total beginners. Students must provide their own zils. Links for ordering and guidance on purchasing are available upon request.
Live music accompaniment will be provided by drummer Stephen Carpenter.
