Video Blog: A Year of Embodiment Week 3

After watching this video I thought to myself, "I can't possibly share this.  I've no make up on, I look tired...what was I thinking?"  But then I watched again and realized that, just as I say in the video, this is where I am right now.  This is me, authentically in this moment.  So, here I am - as I am.

This week I share some thoughts on just what an embodiment practice is and how it has benefited me over the years - even before I knew what it was.  I also share a short body check in and some information on upcoming events.

Also my apologies for the delay, I was asked to fill in for a sick dancer at a show last night and it did not leave me time to edit and render the video.  Next week will be on time.  Until then, peace.

A Journey Through the Major Arcana

Aquarian Tarot
Each card of the tarot's Major Arcana can be said to represent an archetypal step on our path through life. We begin as the The Fool and make our way to The World only to find ourselves The Fool once again.  Other times we may find we are stuck at a certain point on the path, unable to move forward, questioning why we are here. Understanding the wisdom contained in the cards can give you a helpful, and visually beautiful, guide to where you have been, where you, and where you are going.

Join me on an exploration of the 22 cards of the tarot's Major Arcana. Beginning March 1st you will receive a daily email, Monday through Friday, with information about each card in the Major Arcana including:

  • A discussion of the meaning of the card.
  • Journal prompts to help you explore the card more deeply.
  • A daily affirmation or meditation related to the card.
You will also be invited to join a private Facebook group where you can discuss the cards, the journal prompts, and other explorations.

Each Monday we will have an online video call where I will share more information about that week's cards and answer any questions you may have.   I will also offer a short guided meditation on one of that week's cards.  No worries if you can't join the call, links to the recordings will be shared by email and in the Facebook group.

In my 30 years of studying the tarot I have found the Major Arcana to be a  source of guidance and wisdom for myself and my tarot clients.  Whether you are totally new to the tarot or are seeking to deepen your knowledge of the cards this course will help you establish a solid understanding of the Major Arcana and how it may be used a source of guidance and inspiration.

I like to keep my offerings accessible to all regardless of income, so this course is being offered on a sliding scale of  $0.00 to $50.00.   Please use the button below to register for the course and submit your payment. Be sure to include the email address you will be using to receive the course emails

If you are not in a financial position to pay for the course, please use the registration form at the bottom of this post.

I look forward to sharing this journey with you!

My Body's Wisdom: Where does the sadness live?

Movement Session:

I begin with a question, Where does the sadness live?

I pause, pressing my body in the softness of the floor pillow. I breathe. I wait.

Where does MY sadness live?

Here. Here, as a deep, heavy feeling right between my shoulder blades. It hunches me over; constricts me. It drags me to the floor and onto my back.

A thought…Is this what makes some mornings so difficult? I’m surely not strong enough to carry this weight. I lay still, curled up.

My body contracts, bends, it wants to move this feeling; to unstick it. I stretch long. I roll over onto the pillow, hunched as though I’m wrapped around a birthing ball.

I rock. I moan. I kneel and lean arms reaching up, up, up against the wall letting my belly drop and my back to open.

With each breathe the sadness moves, a contraction of spirit, pushes it up into my throat – tightness, releasing - up to the space between my eyes.

Sadness born as tears and voice. I lift my face. I turn away from the wall. I want my sadness seen.

Eyes closed, rocking.

Stretching out long. Back arching. Shoulders twisting. Opening the constricted places.

Breathe again.

Why does sadness live here?
…because this is where your flaw is.

My twisted back? My flaw? No…that is just a thing. The flaw is in feeling, says My Mind…

No, says My Body. There is no flaw in feeling.

My shoulders drop. My fingers touch my cheeks.

Breathe. Move. Breathe. Cry. Move. Move. Cry…breathe.

There is no flaw in feeling.

Heretica utilizes techniques such as guided physical meditation, silent improvisation, group rhythmic exploration and theatrical movement, to aid students in creating physical expressions of emotion through movement and foster a seamless connection between mind and body; thought and action. The class is conducted to live music.

Optional out of class exercises that will help students build their movement practice at home will also be offered. Students who participate in either full session may be eligible to join the Heretica Student Troupe in  the fall of 2018.

You will want to wear comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement.  You may also want to bring a notebook and a water bottle.

Come Home to Yourself: An embodiment workshop (Biddeford)

Come home to your body...

March10, 2018
2:00 - 4:00PM

140 Main Street
Biddeford, ME
(508) 728-4984

Cost:  $25 drop-in/$20 preregistered (see below)

We live in a culture that bombards us with contradictory messages about our bodies.  We are told to love them regardless of their size, shape, or ability, and yet we are also told that if we do not conform to a certain standard our bodies, and thus ourselves, are not worthy of love.  Our go, go, go, busy, busy, busy, lives foster a separation from our physical selves as we live more and more in our heads.

Is it any wonder that we become separated our bodies?  That we can come to see it an object to be manipulated to fit the standards imposed upon it, or one to be ignored completely? Our bodies become something apart from ourselves and as such do not have a voice in our lives.

Embodiment practice helps to bring us back home to ourselves and our bodies.  Our bodies carry a deep wisdom that, if we are able to hear it, can help create a greater awareness of how our mental and emotional state impacts our body, and increase our sense of presence in our daily movement through life.

This embodiment workshop uses techniques such as guided physical meditation, mindfulness, sound exploration, and authentic movement to help you to reconnect to the wisdom of your body.   Post workshop exercises that will help students build an embodiment practice at home will also be offered. The workshops are conducted to live music.

The workshops are open to students of all movement backgrounds. You will want to wear comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement. You may also want to bring a notebook and a water bottle.

In order to facilitate free exploration, we seek to create a safe space for all types of dancers and movement artists to explore creative expression. The class is open to all genders.
