January Class: Deep Improvisation (Heretica)

Heretica Class: Deep Improvisation

When: Tuesdays, 6:45-7:45pm
             Six Week sessions
             January 9 - February 13

Cost:    $60 per full session (no drop-in)/$75 day of (full session only, no drop-ins)

Location:  Bright Star World Dance, Portland, Maine

Heretica comes from the Greek word hairetik√≥s, "one who is able to choose."  Drawing from a variety of contemporary dance styles as well as authentic movement and deep improvisation, Heretica is deep exploration of movement that assists dancers and other movement artists in connecting with the why of movement.  In knowing why we move, we can better determine how we choose to move.

Heretica utilizes techniques such as guided physical meditation, silent improvisation, group rhythmic exploration and theatrical movement, to aid students in creating physical expressions of emotion through movement and foster a seamless connection between mind and body; thought and action. The class is conducted to live music.

Each class includes a warm-up with drills, theatrical dance exercises and cool down.  Optional out of class exercises that will help students build their movement practice at home will also be offered. Students who participate in either full session may be eligible to join the Heretica Student Troupe in  the fall of 2018.

You will want to wear comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement.  You may also want to bring a notebook and a water bottle.

Students of all movement backgrounds are welcome to join the class.  Students should have a solid foundation in their particular movement/dance style.

In order to facilitate free exploration we seek to create a safe space for all types of dancers and movement artists to explore creative expression.  The class is open to all genders and movement forms.  Students should have a solid foundation in their particular movement/dance form.

Note: The studio is located on the third floor of an older building that does not have an elevator.

31 Days of Community!

What is 31 Days of Community?

31 Days of Community begins on December 1st and is 31 days of questions, writing prompts, and personal exercises about community.  They are intended to help each of us explore what community means to us and how we can create more of it in our own lives.

Why am I creating this 31 Days of Community?

In the past few months community is a subject that has come up time and time again in the news, in personal conversations, and in online spaces.  People have expressed a feeling that they don't have enough of a sense of community in their lives and that they don't know how to go about creating it.

As has occurred many other times in my life, when I see a need and feel that there is anything I can do about it, I will do my best to help. I have many years of experience in fostering community and helping others to create connection.  I certainly don't profess to know everything about community building, but one thing I have learned is that is that it is often seen as a daunting task and that many people don't know where or how to begin going about creating it.

31 Days of Community  is my attempt to help bridge that gap between having a desire for more community and taking steps to create it.

How do I become a part of this?

You can sign up with the form below.  Beginning on December 1st your will receive a daily email from me with a question, writing prompt or other exercise that will help you explore this subject of community.

Once you sign up you will receive a confirmation email with more information and a link to a Facebook group where, if you choose to do so, you can share your responses to the questions and exercises.  No one is obligated to join the group but it will be a way for each of us to share our thoughts, ideas and maybe create a little connection ourselves.

I do hope you will consider being a part of this exploration.

Note:  After you register you will receive an email with more information on the 31 Days of Community as well as the Facebook group link.  If the email does not arrive soon after registering, please check you spam folder.  Thank you!

NOTE:  31 Days of Community 2017 has ended, but if you'd like to know when the next one takes place or keep up to date on other community focused events, please sign up below!

What is embodiment?

Sometimes called physical mindfulness, embodiment can create a greater awareness of how your mental and emotional state impact your body and bring a greater sense of presence to your daily movement through life. For movement artists it can bring a new layer of physical expression to our dance and music, and increase our ability to bodily manifest a thought or idea.

In order to facilitate free exploration, we seek to create a safe space for all types of dancers and movement artists to explore creative expression. The class is open to all genders and movement forms.
